Almost every business owner has thought, "we should have an app." Sometimes that is right. Often it is an expensive way to solve a problem that a website and WhatsApp would solve in a week. We build apps, and we still tell many people not to buy one yet. Here is how to decide.
The one question that matters
Will your customers open this thing again and again, or just once in a while?
An app lives or dies on repeat use. People will install an app for something they use weekly or daily. They will not install one for a business they buy from a few times a year, however nice the app is.
When an app earns its cost
- High-frequency use. Daily or weekly habits, such as fitness, learning, delivery tracking or loyalty programs.
- Features a browser cannot match. Offline use, background location, deep camera or sensor access, rich push notifications.
- Two-sided products. Marketplaces and platforms where both sides keep coming back.
- Internal tools. Field staff, delivery partners or sales teams who use the tool all day.
- A product that is the business. If the app itself is what you sell, you need one.
When a website plus WhatsApp is the smarter start
- Customers order or enquire occasionally.
- Your customers are local and already use WhatsApp daily.
- You want to test demand before investing.
- Speed matters more than polish. A website goes live in days. An app takes weeks and needs store approval.
For most shops, restaurants, clinics and service businesses, this is the right first step. A WhatsApp ordering system lets customers browse, order and pay in a chat they already have open, with no install and no store review.
What each option costs and how long it takes
| Option | Typical cost with us | Time to live |
|---|---|---|
| Business website | from ₹20,000 | 5–7 days |
| WhatsApp ordering system | from ₹25,000 | 5–7 days |
| Basic Android + iOS app | from ₹1,00,000 | 2–3 weeks |
The app also carries ongoing costs the other two do not: developer accounts (Apple's costs about US$99 a year), updates for new phone versions, store reviews and support.
The install problem
An app has a hidden cost: you have to convince someone to download it before they ever use it. That is a real barrier, especially for local businesses. A WhatsApp link or a website needs no install, which is why they convert more easily for occasional purchases.
A sensible path: start small, graduate to an app
- Start with a website and WhatsApp. Get customers ordering and enquiring within a week.
- Watch what happens. Do customers come back often? Are they asking for features a chat cannot give?
- Build an app when the behaviour justifies it, using what you learned about what customers actually want.
This route costs less, teaches you more, and means that when you do build an app, you know exactly what it needs to do.
If you do need an app
Build for Android and iOS together from one codebase with a cross-platform framework like React Native, which roughly halves the cost compared to two native builds. Keep the first version to 3 to 5 core screens. Our app development packages start at ₹99,000 with a fixed price and delivery date, and our app cost guide compares every route in detail.
