WordPress vs a custom website: which is right for a small business?

"Should I use WordPress?" is the most common question a small business asks before getting a website. The honest answer is that WordPress is a good tool for some jobs and unnecessary overhead for others. Here is how to tell which job you have.

What WordPress is good at

WordPress is a content management system. Its strength is letting non-technical people publish and edit pages and posts without touching code. If you will add new content every week, such as news, articles, listings or a store with hundreds of products, WordPress and its ecosystem of themes and plugins make that easy.

  • Easy self-editing. You can change text and images yourself.
  • A huge plugin ecosystem. Booking, forums, memberships and online stores already exist.
  • Lots of developers. Finding someone to fix it later is usually easy.

What WordPress costs you that the price tag does not show

  • Updates and security. WordPress, your theme and every plugin need regular updates. Outdated plugins are one of the most common ways WordPress sites get hacked.
  • Speed. A theme plus a stack of plugins tends to produce heavy pages that load slowly on a weak mobile connection, and most of your visitors are on mobile.
  • Plugin sprawl. Each plugin is another thing to pay for, maintain and trust.
  • Hosting. It needs a database and a server, which means ongoing hosting and backups to manage.

What a hand-built custom site is good at

A custom site, built as clean HTML, CSS and JavaScript, does one thing very well: it loads fast, runs on almost free hosting, and has very little to hack, because there is no database or admin login exposed to the internet. For a business whose site is mostly "who we are, what we sell, where to find us, how to contact us," that is exactly what you need.

  • Speed. Pages are small and quick on a phone.
  • Low running cost. Hosting is often free or a few hundred rupees a month.
  • Little to maintain. No plugin updates, nothing to patch every month.
  • Designed around you. Not a theme wearing your logo.

The honest downsides of custom

  • You cannot edit it yourself unless it includes an admin panel, which adds to the cost.
  • Changes go through whoever built it, so you need a builder who stays reachable.
  • Blog-heavy or catalogue-heavy sites with hundreds of pages are easier on WordPress.

A short checklist

Choose WordPress if you will publish new content every week, need a large store, or want several people editing pages without a developer.

Choose custom if the site is mostly stable information with an enquiry form, you care about speed on phones, and you would rather not manage updates.

Choose a DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace and similar) if you have more time than budget and are happy with a template, understanding you pay a subscription indefinitely.

What we build

We build fast custom sites because they suit most local and service businesses. Our website packages start at ₹19,900 with a fixed price and delivery date, and the Growth package includes an admin panel so you can update your own catalogue and content. If WordPress would genuinely serve you better, we will say so.
